Tribulus Terrestris – Libido Enhancer and Muscle Builder

Tribulus terrestris is a kind of plant that has been known to increase sex drive by stimulating the androgen receptors in the brain. The plant extract is also believed to increase the body’s testosterone level thus enhancing libido and improving male sexual performance.

Laboratory experiments previously conducted on primates, rabbits and rats, showed that tribulus terrestris significantly increased the level of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone of these laboratory animals.

Tribulus terrestris is known to be an aphrodisiac, characteristic that can be attributed to the release of nitric oxide from the nerve endings then sends the signals to the male reproductive system. It is being promoted and marketed as a dietary supplement to help the males reach optimum level of sexual performance and to boost muscle-building activity among body builders.

It is used by body builders in PCT or post cycle therapy especially after having completed a cycle of anabolic steroid use. They believe that the use of PCT will replenish the body’s supply of testosterone after having been depleted with the use of anabolic steroids.

The ability of tribulus terrestris to increase testosterone production and boost sexual performance can be attributed to the chemical protodioscin which is believed to provide better and longer-lasting erection and staying power although further experiments are needed to make this claim more credible and convincing.

It is used as ingredient in various herbal concoctions for the treatment of migraines, conjunctivitis, weak vision, and nervousness. It is also used to treat high blood pressure and pain felt on the rib cage. The hormone-balancing effects of tribulus terrestris are perfect for women who suffer from pre-menstrual or post-menopausal syndrome.

It contains beta sitosterols, substances that prevent swelling of the prostate, and prevents the growth of cancer cells in combination with the X steroidal saponins. Its ability to increase the level of luteinizing hormones in the body is perfect for those suffering from impotence and spermaturia (urine that contains semen) and improves the synthesis of the testicular male sex hormones.

Tribulus terrestris is a flowering plant that belongs to the Zygophyllaceae family that thrives in warm temperate and tropical climates in southern Europe, southern Asia, throughout Africa, and Australia. It grows in places with dry, arid climates and poor soil. It is also commonly burra gokharu, puncturevine, caltrop, cathead, yellow vine, goathead, and bindii.

Traditional Chinese medicine has been using tribulus terrestris under the local term bai ji li. It has also long been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine under the Sanskrit name “gokshura”, as ingredient in tonics and other energy-enhancing drinks.

The seeds or nutlets of the tribulus terrestris plant have been used as weapons in southern Africa because of their very sharp punctures. Other criminals smear the seeds with the poisonous juice of the Acokanthera venenata plant and place them where potential victims are likely to walk or step on.
