Donut Mix:

• 122g 100% Pure Pumpkin

• 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

’Tis the season for decadence, but avoid packing on the pounds by treating yourself (in moderation, of course!) to these sweet—but not too sweet—and easy-to-make treats from food blogger Elana Amsterdam, author of Paleo Cooking from Elana’s Pantry: Gluten-Free, Grain-Free, Dairy-Free Recipes. As a bonus, they also make the perfect homemade gift.

Date Orange Bread


_Date-Orange-Bread-8 Thinking of your neighbors during the holidays? Give them date orange loaves wrapped in parchment and tied with festive ribbon. They’ll never guess it’s gluten-free!

(Makes 1 small loaf—about 8 slices)


1⁄3 cup coconut flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon sea salt

4 large eggs

½ cup coconut oil, melted over very low heat

1 tablespoon firmly packed orange zest

½ cup Medjool dates, pitted and chopped


1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 5-x-3-inch mini loaf pan with coconut oil.

2. In a food processor, pulse together the coconut flour, baking soda and salt. Add the eggs, coconut oil and orange zest and pulse until thoroughly combined. Remove the blade from the food processor and stir in the dates.

3. Scoop the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 25–35 minutes, until a knife inserted into the center of the loaf comes out with just a few moist crumbs attached. Let the bread cool in the pan for 1 hour, then serve.




Christmas Chocolate Bark


Christmas-chocolate-web Studded with rich pistachios and tart dried cranberries, then speckled with coarse chunks of salt, this bark is a winner. (Makes 16 squares)


2 cups chocolate chunks

1⁄3 cup unsalted pistachios

1⁄3 cup dried cranberries

1⁄2-1 teaspoon coarse sea salt


1. In a small saucepan over very low heat, melt the chocolate.

2. Pour the chocolate into a parchment paper–lined 8-x-8-inch baking dish.

3. Sprinkle the pistachios and cranberries over the chocolate. Using a metal spatula, spread the mixture evenly back and forth to around ½ inch thickness. Sprinkle the salt over the bark.

4. Allow the bark to sit out until set, 1–2 hours. Cut into 16 squares and serve.




Cinnamon Pecan Brittle


Cinnamon-Pecan-Brittle-web This brittle is great for a party or nice to keep around as a snack. It also makes a lovely hostess gift when placed in a little tin or box, then tied with a pretty ribbon. Feel free to experiment with other nuts instead of the pecans. (Makes 8 servings)


1 egg white

1⁄4 cup agave nectar or honey

1 teaspoon Celtic sea salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

2 cups pecans


1. Preheat the oven to 300°F.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the egg white, agave, salt and cinnamon.

3. Toss the nuts in the egg white mixture to coat.

4. Pour the nut mixture onto a parchment paper–lined baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes, until the nuts are browned.

5. Allow the nuts to cool for 5 minutes, then break apart and serve.

Why I Hate “Cheat” Days

“I can’t wait for Saturday! That’s my cheat day!”


“Oh no, I never eat stuff like that, unless it’s my cheat day.”


“I am dying for some ice cream, is it my cheat day yet??”


Do you ever hear or say things like this?


I HATE cheat days!


I am sorry to say it, but I have to be honest here, I really, really, really hate when I hear people speaking like this!!!! arrrrgh!


And here’s why:


When you send messages to your gorgeous body (YES! YOUR BODY IS GORGEOUS!) that you need to restrict yourself sooooo much that you NEED a whole day to eat like it’s your last chance ever, or like you will never have nachos or ice cream again you are not respecting yourself; not treating your body kindly, and treating yourself (and probably eating) like crapola.


You are better than that!


I often have clients that come to me and want to lose 10 pounds. One of the first things I tell them is to stop judging their food! Stop saying that “this is bad” or “I was bad today” or “I cheated”.


It is not empowering. It does not allow for a BIG picture view of your health and fitness. And it is soooo not sexy!


I am Italian and it is in my genes to LOVE eating! I love food, I love cooking, I love going out to all of the hot restaurants and trying everything. It is a passion of mine.


I can eat whatever I like but here’s the big secret:


Not all of the time!


I look at my diet (and my workouts too) with a BIG PICTURE view. I try to see what I have eaten as a whole for the day or the week. What workouts I have done thus far in the week, and ask myself honest questions such as:


What is missing from my diet? Have I been eating lots of greens? How challenging have my workouts been? Am I feeling my best?


It is so much more effective because truly nothing is off limits to me, which also means I don’t need a cheat day or cheat meal. If one evening I decide to have linguine carbonara then the next day I will amp up my greens, and maybe do a little more cardio. But I don’t feel “bad” or like I cheated. I made a choice, it’s that simple.


My challenge for you is to try to take the judgment out of your food and diet and release the need to have a “cheat” day or “cheat” meals.


Look at your diet and fitness with a set of LARGER and more LOVING eyes. It is more empowering and your body will respond to the LACK of judgment.


Remember, you can eat what you like, just not all of the time!

QUICK RANT – HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD WITHOUT BECOMING LIKE “THEM”


The image below is moronic in its hypocrisy, and it’s limited scope is deplorable: If we could end slavery, we can take care of something as banal as this. (I don’t think small. That’s not my bag.) But… it got me thinking.

Here’s what I discovered as a not-normal straight dude who had to learn how to defend himself: Despite the gratifying irony you get out of being a young man wearing pink, make up, and glitter who proceeds to beat the bullies ass – hard – in public… it changes nothing. (But it DOES make the bully bleed, which is sometimes enough to get you home in one piece.)


I’m not a pacifist, I’m a peace maker – there’s a difference. And if you find yourself in a far-too-real situation, just remember that wine bottles are harder than skulls. And always always ALWAYS kick the fucker when he’s down. (Oh, and wear boots. They hurt more.)


However, as you get older, you’ll find that the REAL LESSON to learn is how to avoid the bastards in the first place, cultivate a life of positive action, and inspire others to do the same.


I too find these additional laws against “directed” violence by bullies/bigots/etc a bit silly – and they are quite unenforceable. If anything, they are an exercise in making us feel like we are “doing” something – which is fine if your only goal is to waste time.


To change anything, you have to HONESTLY change cultures, minds, and hearts.


That is EXACTLY the spirit of what we’re trying to do with Weightlifting Academy and our other outlets: make the world a stronger, safer, more honest, loving, and FUN place to live in.


I take my cues from men like Ghandi and Martin Luther Kind Jr., and I don’t care how silly that may seem for a weightlifting coach to espouse, because it’s a fact. I’m an evangelist on a mission, like my Grandfathers before me.


The world ain’t right, and I aim to help change that as best as I can for as long as I can using the talents and gifts I have at my disposal.


Lastly, Anyone who tells you that “violence is not the answer” has never been attacked in the middle of the night by a drunken hick screaming the words “faggot”. Bullshit. Violence is sometimes the ONLY answer. And when it is: put that bigot down, fast. After all, he was “asking for it”.


Thankfully, you won’t find yourself in those situations particularly often… and they are avoidable as often as not. Take seriously the company you keep; whether you are being a good or a bad Samaritan; and actually go out and DO something to make the changes you want to see happening in the world around you.

Black Bean Protein Brownies






For the past week I’ve had visions of brownies dancing in my head. But you know me, always wanting to be a bad girl but never wanting the calories that come along with it.


Working the Gluten & Allergy Free Expo, I was able to check out some substitutes in baking. Who would have ever thought you could replace flour with black beans? Not me!


I decided to create a recipe to put the theory to the test. The following is a little something, something I came up with… a low carb, low calorie-satisfying snack.

Fitness Friday: Superstar Abs Workout

In this week’s Fitness Friday we are going to show you 6 moves to get sleek sexy abs that you can do anywhere.


Today we are going to flatten your abs using just a mat and a ball (just like the ones you buy for kids).


Let’s get it started.


Superstar Abs Workout


The Workout



  • Glute Bridge – 15 reps

  • Reverse Crunch – 15 reps

  • Crunch with Raised Legs – 15 reps

  • Elbow-to-Knee Crunch – 20 reps

  • Side Plank Lift – 10 reps (2 seconds hold)

  • Side Plank Lift (other side) – 10 reps (2 seconds hold)

  • Plank – 30 seconds hold


I recommend completing this circuit 2-3 times.


I know this is a tough circuit but I’m sure you did awesome!
