When you are on a weight loss program, it is extremely important that you retain as much lean muscle mass as possible. More muscle will help keep your metabolism raised, and will keep your body fat percentage lower over the course of time.
Restricting calories in your diet means that your body must either burn fat or burn muscle to obtain the rest of the calories is needs to work throughout the day.
When you look at fashion models, they appear to be extremely skinny, and still have excess levels of fat on their body. This is because their body has used muscle for energy, instead of fat.
So why has their body decided to burn more muscle than fat? The reason is simple. These models have done no resistance training. The muscles weren’t getting used much, and the body recognizes this. As the muscles weren’t being used, the body only retains the lean muscle mass that is needed to carry on with day to day activities, and decides to use the left over mass as extra calories for energy each day.
When on a weight loss routine, it is vital to have resistance training sessions at least 3 times per week. If the muscles are being used to their full capacity, the body realises this and uses as little muscle as possible when it needs more calories from the body. Instead of burning lean muscle mass, body fat becomes the main source for extra calories each day.
This is why resistance workouts and retaining lean muscle mass is vital when trying to lose weight. Losing muscle is not a good thing.
