I started eating paleo in August due to a (then undiagnosed, merely mysterious) chronic illness. I am now seeing a lyme specialist, and in addition to paleo, have to reduce my sugar intake in an extreme way, because of the (large) amount of antibiotics I take – so, no honey, maple syrup, limited fruit, etc.
Since starting, I have become dramatically better (less tired, reduced muscle and joint pain, less stomach issues, nausea, dizziness, muscle spasms, etc etc). I also have learned a lot, going from basically no cooking knowledge to being able to prepare my own paleo food in a variety of ways. That aspect has been very rewarding. But I am starting to hate eating.
Part of it is that I'm just so sick of most of the meat and veg I eat most frequently, and I don't like a lot of paleo staples (bacon, sweet potato, eggs). Part of it definitely stems from medicine-related nausea. But mostly I just really miss the foods I like: pasta, bread, cookies, more cookies. I make some paleo "junk" food, like cookies (sweetened with xylitol), but the texture is just never quite as satisfying. I've cheated once or twice, and while I felt pretty tired the next day, I must say that bread remains as awesome as ever. I'm not getting this mysterious 'taste-shift' so many people seem to talk about.
So, I guess my question is: did anyone else have an unreasonable amount of trouble sticking with paleo? Any tips? Paleo really requires a lot of dedication and feel like I don't have the …uh…. food source consciousness? to carry me through. How do you resolve any differences between your personal opinions and the more radical paleo mindset, when you need to stick to it for your health?
