The concept of a low carb diet is not an exactly novel or cutting edge one, and indeed, it is an eating regime that has been covered in a variety of different ways and in different styles. Without a doubt, one of the most troublesome and disconcerting problems with any low carb diet is that it can potentially lead the dieter to have a skewered and grossly misinformed perspective of the role that carbohydrates play in the achievement and maintenance of good health.
Carbohydrates are the main energy source of the body and so whilst fat is used to provide insulation and warmth for the body, protein is used for the creation of new cells and the repair of damaged ones, carbs are used to fuel the various chemical reactions that occur throughout the body, whatever the cause.
Please note that not all carbs are bad or negative. Broadly speaking, carbs can be divided into two groups:
Complex or starch based carbohydrates
Simple carbohydrates
Complex carbs are primarily found in items such as pulse vegetables, wholegrain, brown bread, and leafy green vegetables such as spinach.
Simple carbs are routinely found in junk food and processed foodstuffs, including candy bars, chocolate and white bread.
It is also important to appreciate that contrary to popular and common belief, a low carb diet is not solely used for the purposes of weight control, and weight loss, but is also constitutes a primary line of defence for people who suffer from a wide range of different health problems. Therefore, a low carb diet will be prescribed and recommended for people who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, bipolar disorder and even epilepsy.
The low carb diet has managed to polarise the medical community quite dramatically, and so trying to find objective, credible information and scientific study that has clearly defines and tackles the issue head on is an exceptionally difficult and tedious task to try and accomplish indeed. This already contentious issue is made all the more difficult by virtue of the fact that many of the existing literature that exists is hindered by virtue of the fact that it is based solely on short term results, and in addition, is often contradicted by other, similar such studies.
One risk that was widely reported as fact was that a low carb diet placed the dieter relying upon it at a greatly increased risk of developing heart disease and similar problems. However, when the issue was investigated further, it was determined that people who consumed a low carb diet were at no higher level of risk than people who relied upon a more conventional diet.
Please note that if you are planning on relying upon the low carb diet solely for weight loss, then the results are not likely to be permanent, and most of the progress achieved is due to water loss.
