What Must I Give Up on the Paleo Diet?
When people hear the word “diet” they automatically think “What must I give up”? As explained before, the Paleo diet is more of a lifestyle than a diet, but its true that there are a few things to avoid. You may be surprised to learn of some of these, and surprised to learn what you dont have to give up.
- Grains- Its true. In order to call yourself Paleo, you will be giving up grains. There is no way around this as it is the backbone of the Paleo diet. Research has confirmed that for many, grains are unhealthy. We are familiar with gluten the substance in wheat that causes autoimmune problems for those that are diagnosed with celiac disease. However, there are many others that get negative effects from grains. It can be a serious order such as diabetes or just chronic symptoms that make our lives miserable in one way or another. Grains are said to cause these problems by starting an inflammatory condition in the body. Giving up just this one thing can make a huge difference in weight loss and health.
- Beans- It is true that Paleo avoids legumes. This includes the peanut which is in actuality a bean.Beans also contain substances that are harmful to digestion.
- Packaged Foods- Yes, for the most part to follow the Paleo lifestyle you will be giving up foods from a package. Instead of prepackaged foods you will be eating meats, seafood, vegetables and fruits nd nuts. These prepackaged foods are not nutritious and probably contain preservatives which also greatly contribute to obesity and disease. In addition, they may also contain hidden grains, sugars and soy.
- Bread, muffins, cookies- Not necessarily. It is true that for the most part you will be avoiding prepackaged breads, rolls etc. But, once you learn how to bake Pale friendly, you can enjoy Paleo breads, muffins, cookies and yes, even brownies. This is accomplished by substituting nut flours such as almond flour for all purpose flour or grain flours. In many cases the Paleo versions are just as tasty as their counterparts, and yet leave out the harmful grains.
- Dairy- Not necessarily. Many Paleo dieters do include some dairy products in their diets. There are advantages and disadvantages of dairy. Its true that our Paleo ancestors did not have cows to milk and dairy does cause inflammation in some people. The best way to decide is to try a beneficial dairy product such as yogurt on occasion and see if there are negative effects. If there isnt, you may want to include some dairy on occasion.
- Alcoholic beverages - In general, alcohol is toxic to the body, however certain alcoholic drinks have benefits. Wine does have good properties such as resveratrol that are a benefit. Again many Paleo dieters allow themselves an alcoholic beverage on occasion. There may be evidence that Paleo man did in fact partake of alcohol is some manner. Alcohol also adds to our weight gain. If you do include an alcoholic beverage, certain ones are considered better than others inlcuding hard cider, wines and Tequila. Since Paleo avoids grains, it is best to avoid those drinks that are distilled from grain products.
- Sugar- Yes you will be avoiding added sugars in your Paleo meals. Too much sugar is very bad for the body both for weight control and health. You will also be avoiding sugary drinks including some fruit juices. Of course it is impossible to completely eliminate sugars, but for the most part you will be avoiding foods with added sugars. This includes fructose which is very bad for the body and may be implicated in certain diseases including cognitive disease such as dementia.
To summarize, the Paleo diet avoids grains, added sugars, preservatives and to some extent dairy. There are many healtier choices for these products and in general other than grains, Paleo is flexible depending on your health history and reason for adopting the Paleo lifestyle
