Paleo Grubs –

Contrary to popular belief you actually can have food like waffles when you are following the Paleo diet. Unlike many diet plans that cause you to restrict yourself due to rigorous exclusions, Paleo allows you to enjoy the foods you really want as long as you make them the right way. All of these waffle recipes conform to the Paleo way of eating, so you can enjoy them without the least bit of remorse.

1. Basic Paleo Waffles

Let’s start with a basic recipe that comes pretty close to tasting like regular waffles. You don’t always need to feel like you’re on a diet, and if you do Paleo right you shouldn’t feel that way ever. That’s because there’s just too much for you to enjoy, like waffles for breakfast, to lament about the few things that are off limits. They’re using a blend of coconut flour and tapioca flour for gluten-free waffles that will have the right texture and taste, and they provide options for Paleo followers that include dairy as well as those that don’t.

2. Chocolate Waffles

Chocolate waffles are the next logical step, and you can give your waffles an immediate flavor boost with the simple addition of chocolate. Almond flour gets the green light instead of all-purpose flour, and you can see that she’s not using just any almond flour, but a “super fine” variety. This is because almond flour can be a bit course, so you want to make sure that it’s ground down more so that your waffles don’t come out grainy. For the chocolatey goodness she is using two forms of Paleo-approved chocolate, cocao powder and dark chocolate, so you know that this isn’t skimping on what you came for in the first place.

3. Buffalo Chicken Waffles

Here is a savory waffle recipe that gives you the spicy taste of Buffalo wings along with a crispy waffle. It adds a new dynamic to the classic chicken and waffles, and serves as a great alternative to buffalo wings, although you can totally have Paleo-style chicken wings as often as you’d like. This just brings a different taste combination into the game, and is something that is sure to satisfy on several levels. This can serve as a tasty lunch or a light dinner, but would require a side of vegetables to make it a complete Paleo meal.

4. Red Velvet Beet Waffles

Beets provide the red hue needed to call this a red velvet waffle, but they also provide a special antioxidant called betalain that is pretty much only found in beets. This makes these waffles extra special, and something that you can have without any feeling of guilt. Coconut flour ensures that these will cook up just as light and fluffy as waffles that don’t come preloaded with vegetables, and coconut milk and coconut sugar keep this free of dairy and refined sugars. There’s also plenty of chocolate used, so if you don’t like beets but want their benefits, give these a try.

5. Roasted Poblano Waffles

Want your waffles to turn out spicy? These waffles are loaded with the flavor of roasted poblano peppers, so they are not going to taste like your typical sweet waffle. Served as suggested these are waffles that eat like a meal thanks to plenty of chorizo and an egg on top. They also mention that you can add whatever toppings you’d like to these, but since they’re infused with a spicy pepper it would work well with a savory meat like chorizo, ground beef, or ground turkey. While the waffles do a good job of filling you up, they don’t contain enough in the way of vegetables, so be sure you make a side of veggies to go with this.

6. Sweet Potato Waffles

These waffles have sweet potatoes built right into them, so you are getting antioxidants and fiber with your breakfast, not something you can say about most breakfast dishes. The rest of the recipe reads like a typical Paleo waffle, so the main difference is the inclusion of sweet potato. They’ll come out looking like waffles, but they’ll have the distinct taste of sweet potatoes, and they’ll do a better job of staying with you long after the meal has finished. You can top these the same way you would regular waffles, and ghee and maple syrup get our vote.

7. Caramel Apple Spice Waffles

These waffles go all out with the flavor of caramel apples while staying within the boundaries of the Paleo guidelines. Although the ingredients list is somewhat extensive, everything on it is Paleo approved, and it’s worth the extra time it takes to gather everything you’ll need. The caramelized apple syrup is probably something you never thought you could have while on a diet, and it’s sure to make these waffles extra tasty and sweet. The sweetness comes from honey so there isn’t any refined sugar being used. If you go with raw organic honey you’re getting a natural source of sweetness.

8. Almond Flour Sunbutter Waffles

They’re using a combination of almond flour and sunbutter to bring you a delectable waffle that will stand alone in terms of rich, nutty flavor. The almond flour is going to make these waffles hearty, while the sunbutter is going to give them a nice smooth texture throughout. Sunflower seed butter brings the healthy benefits of sunflower seeds to your waffles, so these are better for you than an ordinary plate of waffles. With Paleo it seems there’s always a healthy twist to a popular recipe.

9. Chocolate Strawberry Waffles

These waffles will rival anything you could order from a restaurant, and it’s good to remind your taste buds that they are not being punished. You owe it to yourself to have a tasty treat like this every once in awhile, since it conforms to the basic Paleo eating plan, while allowing you to have sweet and succulent tastes. When you use the time-tested combination of strawberries and chocolate, you know you’re going to end up with something delicious. Making it all Paleo friendly is pretty easy, as long as you stick with an approved chocolate. Here they’re getting chocolate flavor from chocolate protein powder as well as cocoa powder, and they’re sweetening it up with stevia.

10. Coconut Flour Protein Waffles

Coconut flour is a great flour to use in place of general purpose flour because it has a lightness that give the waffles they’re flakey characteristic. They’ve added extra protein to these so it is a great waffle to enjoy a while you are following a strength training regimen. Usually on Paleo your protein needs are met pretty readily because of the meat that you’re consuming, but if you’re pushing yourself in the gym and lifting heavy things the way they did in the Paleolithic era, you may need a protein boost here and there to feed your recovering muscles.

11. Simple Frozen Waffles

You’ll gladly leggo your Eggo when you taste these waffles, which can be frozen after you make them up and eaten throughout the week so you don’t have to spend a lot of time everyday making waffles. Overall it is a pretty basic waffle recipe, and doesn’t use any flour or other grains. Top this off with 100% pure maple syrup and you have a waffle breakfast that tastes just like you remember. This is a much better option than feeding your family processed pre-made waffles that you put in the toaster. Those include ingredients like industrial-grade oils, sugar, preservatives, and synthetic vitamins.

12. Pumpkin Waffles

Putting pumpkin into a waffle is great way to make a fall or winter waffle, because it provides the fiber and antioxidants that pumpkins contain. Not only does this include pumpkin, but there are also seasonings used to bring out the flavor of the pumpkin so it has that classic taste to it. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and others combine to give these waffles a taste that will make you want these every morning when the weather outside is a bit chilly. They even give you the recipe for a creamy maple whip to top these off, which pretty much seals the deal on deliciousness.

13. Bacon Pecan Waffles

It doesn’t take very long for Paleo chefs to start putting bacon into traditional recipes. If you already like to have taken with your waffles this is one way to combine the two. Once you add the nutty flavor of pecans to the mix you have something really special on your hands with the added protein and healthy fats they contain. You’re getting roughly one strip of bacon in each waffle. Notice how they’re serving these up with sausage, they didn’t let the fact that bacon is built into these stop them from eating more meat. So Paleo.

14. Paleo Chicken and Waffles

No waffle list would be complete without this old standby, the classic savory taste of chicken with the sweetness of waffles and syrup. The best part is that you can dunk your chicken into the excess syrup for a sweet and meaty taste. Chicken and waffles is the specialty menu item for many southern restaurants, but it’s better to make your own so that you know what is going into each piece of this dish. You can use high quality chicken pieces and seek out the best almond meal and flax seed meal so that this is one nutritious meal.

15. Lemon Poppy Seed Waffle s

If you’re a fan of lemon poppy seed muffins you will definitely love these lemon poppy seed waffles. They’re made in much the same way, except instead of putting them into muffin form, they have put them into a waffle iron. These are very easy to make, you just assemble all of the ingredients sorted by whether they’re wet or dry, and then combine them in the order she gives. Drop it onto your waffle maker and it takes over from there. Like any other waffle, syrup is in order, and on Paleo maple syrup is an approved source of sweet.

16. Savory Sweet Potato Chive Waffles

Waffles pretty much come in two different forms: savory or sweet, and these waffles are playing the savory card with sweet potatoes and chives. The sweet potatoes add vitamins and fiber to the mix, while the chives give it a special oniony taste. We love that they’ve made a full meal out of this by adding eggs and bacon to it, and since the sweet potatoes are in the waffle it’s almost as if the waffle is taking the place of hash browns. This is a start to your day that will easily fuel you into the lunch hour.

17. Macadamia Waffles with Fruit Syrup

The buttery taste of macadamia nuts make these waffles something you simply have to try. It is really nice that they show you how to make the fruit syrup that goes along with these. You’ll want to give yourself the green light on macadamia nuts if you’ve previously written them off as not being good for you. They got dubbed as being high in fat back in the fat-free diet craze era, but now we know that they actually provide good fats for us, and they can be eaten in moderation.

18. Wild-man Waffles

These waffles are sure to satisfy, as they contain plenty of ingredients to keep you fueled for hours. Wild blueberries, walnuts, a banana, eggs, cinnamon, and vanilla extract make sure that these taste good, and are also good for you. Always buy organic maple syrup so you can be sure that nothing has been added to it, and the maple trees they come from haven’t been treated with anything. Big, light, and fluffy waffles are yours for the taking as long as you follow the step-by-step directions provided.

19. Crispy Almond Waffles

Crispy, flaky waffles is what we’re after here, and this recipe uses almond flour to infuse the waffles with a nutty taste. The hot buttery peaches that go on top of these waffles are the real show-stealer, and their texture is a nice contrast to the crispiness of the waffles. You get to use frozen peach slices, so if you already have these in the freezer that’s a bonus, but if not it’s good to stock an assortment of frozen fruits because they come in handy in a number of recipes.
