A massive EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) study involving 10 European countries and nearly half a million people helped researchers conclude that diets high in processed meats increased a person’s risk of premature death. While other lifestyle choices came into play (vegetarians tended to be healthier and less obese than their carnivore peers), such a large-scale investigation showed the absolute consequences of regularly feasting on processed meat. Those who indulge are more likely to get cancer and cardiovascular disease.
