The Zone Diet Plan

The Zone Diet Plan was created by Dr Barry Sears a biochemist from California. Its is known for its 40-30-30 plan which is the desired balance of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Carbs represent 40% and proteins and fats are 30% of the diet. The diet is popular among celebrities like Madonna, Sandra Bullock and Demi Moore. Of course what ever is popular among celebrities often becomes popular in the general public.

The Zone Diet is similar in ways to the South Beach Diet Plan in that both rely heavily on the gylcemic index. The goal is to eat good carbs and avoid the bad carbs. Those carbs which are high on the index cause a rapid release in insulin are bad. Most of the good carbs are found in fruits and vegetables. The main source of fat should be heart healthy monounsaturated fats like those found in olive oil and nuts. Meat makes up most of the protein in the diet.

The Zone Diet Plan gets its name from the ‘Zone Blocks’ that the diet uses. The diet is divided into these zone blocks in order to achieve to desired carb, protein and fat ratios. A certain number of these blocks are eaten each day and at every meal. Calculating the number of zone blocks your allowed in not difficult as its simply a matter of inputting your bodies weight and measurements into the calculator. The tough part is preparing the meals each day so they equal the right number of blocks. This can be very time consuming and you will need a scale.

Of course to be able to follow the Zone Diet Plan you pretty much need the book. Even with the book the Plan is very complex and time consuming. You will need to have a scale to measure things which can become tedious unless you have a personal chef like many of the celebrities who follow it.
