Coffee Health Problems

Drinking too much coffee can increase the risk for a number of problems in certain individuals, as well as becoming an addiction for some. While there have been many health benefits of coffee discovered recently, it is important to know that there are some negative effects as well.

The caffeine in coffee causes the liver to release glycogen, which can cause wide variances in blood sugar levels. Many times, it can result in symptoms of hypoglycemia, which include weakness, nervousness, fatigue, and heart palpitations.

Coffee may also have an adverse effect on fertility in women, so women who are trying to become pregnant should avoid coffee. Numerous studies have also found that caffeine consumption while pregnant is often associated with low birth weight.

Drinking coffee can prevent your body from absorbing certain necessary minerals such as calcium, and can therefore increase the risk for osteoporosis. Studies indicate that long-term coffee consumption of more than two cups a day may result in decreased bone density, although some of these adverse effects can be mitigated by adding milk.

Many people who consume coffee on a daily basis will experience some type of gastric problems as a result. Coffee can be a contributing factor to heartburn, and can aggravate ulcers in those individuals who suffer from them.

Caffeine does have an addictive effect in certain individuals, and many who stop drinking coffee will experience withdrawal symptoms. These can include headaches, fatigue, and irritability or depression. The symptoms of caffeine withdrawal generally begin within 12-24 hours of quitting caffeine and can last up to eight or nine days before subsiding.

Individuals who are sensitive to caffeine or have underlying health issues may wish to consult their physician about the possible effects of coffee consumption.
