A study published in the journal Diabetologia has reported on a considerable lowering of blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes when they adopted a gluten and grain free diet called the Paleo diet, in a controlled study.
This study had half of the people consuming a Mediterranean diet, and the other half consuming a Paleo diet – with all the test subjects having full-blown Type 2 diabetes.
A typical Mediterranean diet consists of:
- whole grains,
- fruits,
- vegetables,
- beans,
- nuts,
- seeds, and
- healthy fats.
Whereas a Paleo diet consists typically of:
- no grains,
- no dairy,
- no salt,
- with plenty of vegetables, fruit, nuts, lean meats and seafood.
The overall difference between the two really being no dairy and no grains on the Paleo diet.
The results were very interesting and found that the people on the Mediterranean diet had very small, if any at all, improvements in their blood sugar levels and their symptoms associated with Type 2 diabetes. Whereas the test subjects who followed the Paleo diet, demonstrated a distinct lowering of their blood sugar levels.
The overall consensus from this particular study showed there is a clear connection with adopting a gluten-free diet and the lowering of blood sugar levels in people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. With the actual statistics being a 7 percent of all test subjects following the Mediterranean diet experiencing a reduction in blood sugar levels, and a whopping 26 percent reduction in blood sugar levels in all test subjects who adhered to the Paleo diet.
The diabetics in the Paleo group at the end of study showed their blood sugar levels were in fact within the healthy normal range, which means they were not diabetic anymore and that this type of diet could help many people who are Type 2 diabetic sufferers.
I also feel there is more to this study than just going gluten-free. There is also the fact that no dairy and no grains whatsoever were consumed by the Paleo diet test subjects. This suggests the best diet for all Type 2 diabetes sufferers may indeed be this particular diet, but more testing like this would be needed first. But for now it’s an excellent start to demonstrate the strong proof that changing your diet can reverse your Type 2 diabetes and show you by being proactive you do not have to live with this disease for the rest of your life.
