How to Lose Weight by Eating Like a Caveman

If you’ve struggled with excess weight you’re probably familiar with most of the diet trends and fads available on the market. The Atkins Diet came into the limelight a few years ago with claims that a high protein and low carbohydrate diet would be the keys to long term weight loss. As diet trends come and go, a new version of the Atkins Diet is back with a twist. Although it maybe considered a new diet, it can be considered the oldest diet around. It is called the Paleolithic Diet (abbreviated paleo diet or paleodiet), also popularly referred to as the Caveman diet.

Research showed 2.5 million years ago prehistoric man’s daily meals were based on a diet of animals and plants. Some scientists believe modern day humans are genetically adapted to the diet of their ancestors and human genetics have not dramatically changed by much so their diet shouldn’t. Basically, what was good for the caveman will also be good for you. Foods such as meat, fish, vegetables, roots, fruit and nuts were commonly available to our ancestors and are recommended under the Paleo Diet. Notice the exclusion of grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar and processed oils which were not readily available in those times.

To be true to the Paelo Diet, it is advised to eat leaner cuts of meat free of food additives, preferably wild game meats and grass-fed beef since they contain high levels of omega-3 fats compared with grain-produced domestic meats. Free range meats found at specialty grocery stores are highly recommended. Practitioners are permitted to drink mainly water, and some advocates recommend tea as a healthy drink but alcoholic beverages are restricted from the diet.

As you can see this sounds strikingly similar to the Atkins Diet. The Caveman diet also stresses the consumption of high protein and low complex carbohydrates. As with any new diet trend, there’s always an upgrade. Refined foods and mass produced meats should be avoided. If you want to try the Caveman Diet it’s pretty simple and can be a healthy and long term approach to weight loss.
