Hot chocolate is not one of the things you’ll need to give up on Paleo, but you won’t be able to use the packets of cocoa found in stores. Make your own healthier version of hot chocolate with ingredients that won’t leave you feeling groggy later. Several different styles to choose from.

Get Movin’ Momma! Moving Moms Build Lifelong Exercise Habits

Pregnancy is such an exciting time filled with preparations—from putting together cribs to stocking up on onesies. During pregnancy, women focus on eating the right food, getting adequate vitamins and staying away from harmful chemicals, caffeine and alcohol, which are all very important lifestyle changes.
But what can moms-to-be do to create lasting positive impact long after pregnancy? Exercising is one of the best things a mom-to-be can do with broad, long-term benefits such as stabilizing joints to positively affecting labor and delivery, and building an exercise habit. Exercise can also become a ritual of carving out time for yourself—a habit which will be tremendously important once the baby arrives.
Most experts agree that pregnant women need to exercise to be healthy and that most women with uncomplicated pregnancies can safely exercise. A healthy woman with a normal pregnancy may either continue her regular exercise regimen or begin a new exercise program during pregnancy. Be sure to check with your physician for your particular exercise prescription.
Dr. Shelby Scott argues in an ACSM Health and Fitness Journal article that exercise positively affects pregnancy, labor and possibly pregnancy outcomes. More than 90 percent of women who exercise during pregnancy will continue to exercise afterwards, says Dr. Scott. An exercise habit is extremely important as our nation faces an epidemic of obesity. Plus, moms who exercise are more likely to have kids who exercise, which is a double win!
Women who exercise during pregnancy experience fewer musculoskeletal problems, including less back and pelvic pain, and increased cardiovascular fitness, body image and well-being. Who wouldn’t want this impressive list of benefits?
Exercise Intensity
Pregnancy is probably not the time for serious competition, or to increase fitness or performance levels. It should be thought of as a time to maintain strength. For women who are continuing their regular exercise regimen during pregnancy, exercise intensity should not exceed pre-pregnancy levels. Moderate-to-hard intensity is safe for a woman who is accustomed to this level of exercise. I’m sure you’ve seen articles in national press where women do insanely difficult workouts during pregnancy. Women who do these things are already insanely strong before they get pregnant.
What are some good kinds of exercise while pregnant?
Walking, swimming, Pilates and other low-impact activities are great for women who do not already have an established workout routine.
Recently I posted the article, “Maintaining the Core During the 3rd Trimester of Pregnancy <http://ift.tt/1mZf4WH> ,” which hopefully gave some helpful ideas about why core work is important during pregnancy. Pilates provides an awesome core and general conditioning workout during pregnancy.
Pilates can be the perfect exercise method because it’s gentle, stabilizes the joints and spine, focuses on alignment and form, and generally is done in small groups for optimal instructor feedback. Additionally, Pilates helps to stabilize joints due to ligament laxity from hormone changes, and reduces the aches and pains of carrying a pregnancy. Plus, this added awareness of support muscles around the major joints will help prevent injury while doing light to moderate aerobic exercise during pregnancy. Pilates, for the most part, is not aerobic, so you will not need to monitor heart rate as much as with other kinds of exercise.
So what are the guidelines for exercising while pregnant?
The American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Sports Medicine suggest keeping the heart rate below 140 beats per minute while exercising and recommend 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days, if not all, days of the week.
It can be easy to meet these basic guidelines. For the aerobic component try short walks at a moderate pace throughout the week, checking to be sure your heart rate stays below 140 bbm.
Go one step further by adding Pilates to support this aerobic activity and ensure your joints stay happy. Take prenatal Pilates sessions that incorporate brief, light aerobic elements such as bouncing on the stability ball, as well as bands and light weights to maintain joint strength.

12 Paleo Egg Muffins for a Protein-Filled Morning
Egg muffins are a handy way to take your breakfast with you, with the portability of a muffin and the protein power of eggs. The following recipes use no dairy or grains, leaving you with plenty of wholesome goodness and protein to get you well into lunch with no slowdowns.
1. ‘Chorizo’ Breakfast Egg Muffins
Start your morning off with a spicy kick in this chorizo sausage made from a list of spices that includes cumin, chili powder, and cayenne. The result is savory, spicy sausage mixed in with a hearty egg muffin. No need to stop at Micky D’s for a McMuffin when you have a muffin made entirely from eggs. Let’s face it, navigating friendships when you’ve transitioned to a plant-strong lifestyle while others haven’t can put stress on relationships. Engine 2 and Dr. Doug Lisle do whole seminars just on how to handle these sticky situations because, well, they’re sticky!
We are social beings and so much of our culture and how we see ourselves within our community context revolves around food. So when we transform our eating style it’s no surprise that it can stir up a lot of feelings, and challenges us to think in new ways to avoid upending our important relationships. I know, we’re talking about food here, people. But it’s just one of those things that I think we as humans have managed to weave into the fabric of our social systems.
So, here are a few simple things I learned over the past two years as I’ve taken my one thread and weaved a new plant-strong pattern.
You Be You. People will ask you lots of questions about what or why you’re eating a plant-based diet. Some of them are genuine; some of them might feel antagonistic. All of them reflect the curiosity and very possibly the fears of the person asking. Yes fear. Don’t get too hung up on other people’s reactions or bother feeling criticized. That’s just other people projecting their own stuff. Do be 100% true to yourself. Do not compromise your health for someone else’s social comfort. Up to you how you answer questions (and there are great resources from Engine 2 on this topic), just don’t take it personally because it’s not personal about you at all. Eventually people will see that you are serious about your health and they will accept that you’ve made a change.
Let Others Be Who They Are Too. Many of us who practice plant-strong nutrition have experienced very positive results. It is not uncommon for people to report feeling that their lives are transformed. That’s fabulous news! When that happens we want to shout it from the rooftops and help everyone else too. But people can feel threatened and judged about their own choices so be careful to not be braggy, judgy or preachy. Be extra kind to your friends who are not interested to hear about your lifestyle change. Let them know that you accept them for who they are, not for what they eat. Instead, talk about their interests.
Stay Connected. You may worry about what you’re going to do if your social life used to revolve around backyard BBQ’s or going out for burgers. This is reasonable, and you need to think about other things to do with your friends that do not make food the primary focus. Being with people really doesn’t have to mean making an Olympic sport out of eating. Redefine getting together to be: take a walk, go to a concert, go to a movie, go to a lecture, go to a museum, play a game, ride a bike, go shopping, take a yoga class, you get the idea. You can show your friends that there are many dimensions to your friendship beyond what you eat.
Be an Inspiration. Really? Yes, really! By being true to yourself while still accepting the choices of all those around you, you will likely become a living example. People pay attention to what other people are doing, whether you advertise it or not. When you take care of yourself and take charge of your health, the evidence is written all over YOU and people will notice. Don’t be surprised if you find your friends start to pick up ideas from you and implement them in their own life. And when that happens you know you’ve been an inspiration….and really, there’s no better feeling!
This is a very exciting time when we make healthy changes in our lifestyles. It causes us to grow in new ways. When we can embrace that growth with positive energy it can deepen and strengthen our friendships in profound ways.

I was a chubby lad to say the least. This trend continued into my teens and well into my twenties despite my numerous attempts at fad-diets, unhealthy eating plans, starvation, and exhausting exercise regimes.
It all came to a head one afternoon at the age of 25; I experienced acute chest pains. My GP was quick to order a series of blood tests. My liver, kidney, thyroid, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol results were dangerously out of whack; results that resembled a man two or three times my age, and in very poor health. The same GP, and two others, were quite keen to put me on blood pressure and cholesterol lowering medications. Absolutely NO frickin’ way! At 175cm and weighing in at a hefty 95kgs, I decided that enough was enough. I was told in no uncertain terms that I was quickly following in my father’s footsteps. Dad had his first heart attack at age 44, and his second at the age of 59. I was grateful for the wake-up call, but not for the nutritional misinformation that followed. I adhered to conventional wisdom for three years; adhered to the ‘healthy’ food pyramid and exercised compulsively most days. I only succeeded in gaining more fat, feeling hungry all the time, and exhausting my adrenal glands further.
Enter Robb Wolf and the ”The Paleo Solution’… amongst a couple of other life changing reads that found me at precisely the right time. Synchronicity perhaps?! I think so. This moment in time was a akin to the cliched cross-roads; start a life of ‘sick care’ with endless medications, ignoring the root cause, or take control of my own health and well-being, allowing my body to repair itself? Today, at 30 years of age, weighing in at 69kg, the ripple effect continues to affect those close to me; family, friends, and a countless number of clients have benefitted from the seed that planted.
There were some less obvious changes too that I began to notice over time; I’ve stopped snoring, my anxiety has lifted, my skin is clear, I am confident, my libido has skyrocketed, I feel loads faster on the sporting field, AND I’M HAPPY!
This has had such a profound impact on my life that I decided to follow my passion. I am now a Nutritional Health Coach and Personal Trainer over at The Ancestral Body. Again – Thank you!
